However, the addictive drug meant that all brain areas were shut down over time, except for the area which is responsible for the basic need for fresh meat. Lots of meat! As if that were not bad enough, this disease also leads to the fact that the people affected cannot die naturally. A high level of force is necessary.

Carry Your Own Joy

This book is about art, friendship, and an exceptional person who inspired joy in others and who was a great abstract painter. Beloved for his free spirit, humor and incredible counseling skills, Hari E. Thomas (1938-2011) was a gifted and prolific abstract painter who left a legacy of colorful, mixed media works, mostly on paper. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Thomas moved to San Francisco in 1969, the Summer of Love, and he remained there for over 40 years. Always wary of egotism and intent on subduing his own ego, Thomas rarely showed his paintings in the later half of his life; hence he is unknown as a painter except with close friends and family. Presented here are 108 reproductions of his paintings, together with his life story based on interviews with his son and closest friends, and on the author's memories of him. Thomas was a spiritualist and freethinker who read copiously, meditated regularly, and shared what he learned. He believed in a holistic approach to life, was a staunch vegetarian, and advised others on a myriad of subjects, including nutrition and healing, relationships, meditation and career issues. Above all, Thomas steadily encouraged others to find joy through their own creative expression. In his vibrant paintings, viewers can see evidence of Thomas' dynamism, discipline, energy, and connectedness to the more invisible, spiritual aspects of life. His mixed media paim nags, many of which have three-dimensional and relief formation, exude joy. Thomas' paintings add abundantly to the global art heritage of abstract art and to the legacy of American artists, especially African Americans and Native Americans, since Thomas was a blend of these ethnicities. crossing all lines of race, culture, and creed, Thomas' life teemed with love, brotherhood and friendships. His story therefore contributes mightily to a world yearning for peace.

The Lotus & The Rose

What happens when a Tibetan Buddhist lama and a Christian clergyman sit down to talk? And not just any lama and clergyman, but a renegade Catholic priest silenced by the Church for his progressive and inclusive beliefs and an American-born secular Jew who once embraced Tibetan Buddhism as a student, and now is embraced as a teacher. These conversations between Lama Tsomo and Matthew Fox over the past years explore the essential principles shared by their traditions-and the differences that distinguish them. The Lotus & The Rose includes three public dialogues between Matthew and Lama Tsomo during weekend workshops at Stanford University, The Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, and The Jung Center in Houston. Also included is a more personal conversation with no audience except each other. And, finally, individual interviews with both of them, revealing more about their own lives and worldview. Also available to the reader are video excerpts from the presentations, conversations, and interviews. Buddhists, Christians, followers of other spiritual traditions-and perhaps no spiritual tradition at all-will be intrigued by the range of ideas, and impressed and enlightened by the knowledge and experience that Matthew and Lama Tsomo bring to their exchanges. In this perilously contentious world, all viewers will be heartened by the admiration, respect, humor, and warmth that flows between these two friends who celebrate their common ground and delight in their differences.

Thousands of books and articles have been written about the Battle of Gettysburg. Almost every topic has been thoroughly scrutinized except one: Paul Philippoteaux¿s massive cyclorama painting The Battle of Gettysburg, which depicts Pickett¿s Charge, the final attack at Gettysburg. The Gettysburg Cyclorama: The Turning Point of the Civil War on Canvas is the first comprehensive study of this art masterpiece and historic artifact. This in-depth study of the history of the cyclorama discusses every aspect of this treasure, which was first displayed in 1884 and underwent a massive restoration in 2008. Coverage includes not only how it was created and what it depicts, but the changes it has undergone and where and how it was moved. Authors Chris Brenneman and Sue Boardman also discuss in fascinating detail how the painting was interpreted by Civil War veterans in the late 19th Century. With the aid of award-winning photographer Bill Dowling, the authors utilized modern photography to compare the painting with historic and modern pictures of the landscape. Dowling¿s remarkable close-up digital photography allows readers to focus on distant details that usually pass unseen. Every officer, unit, terrain feature, farm, and more pictured in the painting is discussed in detail. Even more remarkable, the authors reveal an important new discovery made during the research for this book: in order to address suggestions from the viewers, the cyclorama was significantly modified five years after it was created to add more soldiers, additional flags, and even General George Meade, the commander of the Union Army! With hundreds of rare historic photographs and beautiful modern pictures of a truly great work of art, The Gettysburg Cyclorama: The Turning Point of the Civil War on Canvas is a must-have for anyone interested in the Battle of Gettysburg or is simply a lover of exquisite art.
