Painting as Medicine in Early Modern Rome

"In Painting as Medicine in Early Modern Rome, Frances Gage undertakes an in-depth study of the writings of the physician and art critic Giulio Mancini. Using Mancini¿s unpublished treatises as well as contemporary documents, Gage demonstrates that in the early modern world, belief in the transformational power of images was not limited to cult images, as has often been assumed, but applied to secular ones as well. This important new interpretation of the value of images and the motivations underlying the rise of private art collections in the early modern period challenges purely economic or status-based explanations. Gage demonstrates that paintings were understood to have profound effects on the minds, imaginations, and bodies of viewers. Indeed, paintings were believed to affect the health and emotional balance of beholders¿extending even to the look and disposition of their offspring¿and to compel them to behave according to civic and moral values. In using medical discourse as an analytical tool to help elucidate the meaning that collectors and viewers attributed to specific genres of painting, Gage shows that images truly informed actions, shaping everyday rituals from reproductive practices to exercise. In doing so, she concludes that sharp distinctions between an artwork¿s aesthetic value and its utility did not apply in the early modern period.

"I'm going to do this performance with all of you. Without you there would be no performance...," shouts Christian Falsnaes (b. Copenhagen, 1980, lives and works in Berlin) at the beginning of his engaging performance, Front, shown at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2014. It is his relationship to the audience that lies at the core of his artistic practice. Falsnaes's idea of performance revolves around participatory pieces where the spectators and the artist work in conjunction to produce an artwork. He and the various viewers who have helped him work with diverse media, including painting, collage, installation, and video. At the core of this dynamic relationship-between the artist and audience-are the rules, customs, and behavior that give rise to the result of the interaction. Themes of authority, submission, and uniqueness underwrite the unforeseeable and uncontrollable nature of his performances. This monograph documents these varied actions and outcomes as well as contains short descriptions of the works from curators who were involved in them: Carson Chan, Anna-Catharina Gebbers, Jule Hillgärtner, Noemi Smolik, and Thomas Thiel. The artist's interview was conducted by Aaron Bogart.

Yayoi Kusama: Give Me Love documents the artist's most recent exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, which marked the US debut of The Obliteration Room , an all-white, domestic interior that viewers are invited to cover with dot stickers of various sizes and colors.Widely recognized as one of the most popular artists in the world, Yayoi Kusama has shaped her own narrative of postwar and contemporary art. Minimalism and Pop art, abstraction and conceptualism coincide in her practice, which spans painting, sculpture, performance, room-sized and outdoor installation, the written word, films, fashion, design, and architectural interventions. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Yayoi Kusama briefly studied painting in Kyoto before moving to New York City in the late 1950s. In the mid-1960s, she established herself in New York as an important avant-garde artist by staging groundbreaking happenings, events, and exhibitions. Now in her late 80s, Kusama is entering one of the richest creative periods of her life. Immersed in her studio six days a week, Kusama has spoken of her renewed dedication to creating art over the past years: [N]ew ideas come welling up every day.Now I am more keenly aware of the time that remains and more in awe of the vast scope of art.Taking The Obliteration Room as its centerpiece, this catalogue reveals, in vivid large-scale plates, the transformation of the space from a clean white interior to a stunningly saturated room, with ceilings, walls, and furniture covered in myriad multicolored stickers put there by viewers over the course of the exhibition. The catalogue also includes beautiful reproductions of Kusama's new large-format paintings from My Eternal Soul series. Ranging from bright and densely pixelated forms, to umber figures with darker blues and muted oranges, these paintings demonstrate the artist's striking command of color, and her exceptional control over balance and contrast. Bold brushstrokes hover between figuration and abstraction, vibrant, animated, and intense, these paintings introduce their own powerful pictorial logic, at once contemporary and universal. The catalogue continues with a selection of new, large Pumpkin sculptures, a form that Kusama has been exploring since her studies in Japan in the 1950s, and which gained prominence in the 1980s, continuing to remain an essential part of her practice. Made of shiny stainless steel and featuring painted dots or dot-shaped perforations that recall The Obliteration Room , these immersive works seem created on human scale, with the tallest measuring 70 inches (178 cm). Vibrant plates capture how color, shape, size, and surface merge in these sculptures and mesmerize the viewer. Texts include a "Hymn to Yayoi Kusama" by art critic and poet Akira Tatehata and a poem by the artist herself.

ISBN Mimetic Contagion ( Art and Artifice in Te...

When we are confronted with a work of art, what is its effect on us? In contrast to post-Enlightenment conceptions, which tend to restrict themselves to aesthetic or discursive responses, the ancient Greeks and Romans often conceived works of art as having a more dynamic effect on their viewers, inspiring them to direct imitation of what they saw represented. This notion of 'mimetic contagion' was a persistent and widespread mode of framing response to art across theancient world, discernible in both popular and elevated cultural forms, yet deployed differently in various historical contexts, it is only under the specificity of a particular cultural moment's concerns that it becomes most useful as a lens for understanding how that culture is attempting tonegotiate the problems of representation. After framing the phenomenon in terms general enough to be applicable across many periods, literary genres, and artistic media, this volume takes a particular literary work, Terence's Eunuch, as a starting point, both as a vivid example of this extensive pattern, and as a case study situating use of the motif within the peculiarities of a particular historical moment, in this case mid-second-century BC Rome and its anxieties about the power of art. One of the features of mimeticcontagion frequently noted in this study is its capacity to render the operation of a particular work of art an emblem for the effect of representation more generally, and this is certainly the case in the Eunuch, whereby the painting at the centre of the play functions as a metatheatrical figure for the dynamicsof mimesis throughout, illustrating how the concept may function as the key to a particular literary work. Although mimetic contagion is only one available Greco-Roman strategy for understanding the power of art, by offering an extended reading of a single work of literature through this lens, this volume demonstrates what ramifications closer attention to it might have for modern readers and literary criticism.

Attische Mantelfiguren

Mantle figures, a central motif of the Attic red-figure vase production, form the subject matter of the present volume, which introduces an innovative approach towards the representational system of Attic vase painting. So far, the communis opinio on anonymous male figures wearing the himation is dominated by a perception rooted in later depictions, where these seemingly isolated figures are shown only on one side of the vase and are difficult to integrate into existing semantic categories. However, a typological and semantic study of this motif on Attic red-figure vases of the 6th-5th centuries B. C. demonstrates that mantle figures in their diachronic, pictorial and semantic development show both a varied iconographic spectrum and are significant in terms of communication and meaning content. The analysis of an extensive and representative corpus reveals that this motif, one of the most common on Attic red-figure vases, is not only a more complex and relevant element of Ancient imagery than has been realised so far, but indeed can stand as an almost paradigmatic interpretative key for the relationship between producers, viewers, objects and imagery.

The Dutch painter Evert Thielen ( 1954) is a master of realistic painting. With painted details of particular beauty he carries viewers off to his artistic cosmos. He creates several levels of reality, connects them in the picture, and embeds them in a compositional artistic schema, whereby his painting style and way of working call to mind the golden age of Dutch painting. His choice of motifs and type of composition, however, enable him to translate them into a contemporary, artistic language. The new publication presents a compilation of the best works from the painter's oeuvre so far for the first time. Numerous photos of details are combined with a text that takes an in-depth look at Thielen's aesthetic theories and underlying philosophy.

Dorothee Diebold. Biomorphic Painting

Organoid forms leave their traditional place on the wall and protrude into the space. They hang like living entities under a ceiling, nestle in niches or are placed on the floor as sculptures. Dorothee Diebold developed her current series of Biomorphic Paintings (2018/19) through an examination of the panel painting. She thus questions the relationship between volume and surface, density and heaviness in a way that irritates viewers in a positive way.
