So you think your mom is embarrassing? You won't after you meet mine. She's the co-host of a morning television show and her host chat has covered everything I've done from puking on my piano teacher's shoes to gluing antlers on my head. But I've got the microphone now and I'm doing weekly commentaries on my school's broadcast/podcast. "Don't get me wrong, mom's awesome, and I'd never really want to freak her out. But if viewers get to hear about my private life, why can't I dish about Mom's new boyfriend, or how dorky she is as a school volunteer?"Did I mention my friendships with my loud, bossy BFF and former BFFs are in total flux? And what is this thing called middle school? Definitely stay tuned. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Becca Battoe. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/lili/000912/bk_lili_000912_sample.mp3. Fed by thrilling recent discoveries from Saul Leiter's vast archive, "In My Room" provides an in-depth study of the nude, through intimate photographs of the women Leiter knew. Showing deeply personal interior spaces, often illuminated by the lush natural light of the artist's studio in New York City's East Village, these black-and-white images reveal the unique collaboration between Leiter and his subjects. In the 1970s, Leiter planned to make a book of his nudes, but never realized the project in his lifetime. Now we are granted a first-time look at this body of work, which Leiter began on his arrival in New York in 1946 and chipped away at over the next two decades. Leiter, who was also a painter, incorporates abstract elements into these photographs and often shows the influence of his favorite artists, including Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. The prolific Leiter, who painted and took pictures fervently up to his death, worked in relative obscurity well into his eighties. Leiter preferred solitude in life, and resisted any type of explanation or analysis of his work. With "In My Room", Leiter ushers viewers into his private world while retaining his strong sense of mystery.

Guido Argentini: Eros

The work of Guido Argentini has been evolving from his very first book Silvereye through the following four books until this latest project: Eros . From the abstract bodies coated with silver paint to the eroticism of Private Rooms and Reflections, the need of telling stories has become more and more urgent for Argentini. The images of Eros are only suggesting stories to the viewers. The use of the diptych, two images paired together, an image of a woman and a photograph of a landscape or a still life helps to create a narrative. These stories are still and silent they have no voice and no soundtrack. The stories are only told by the emotions of their characters. Each woman is dreaming and, at the same time, we, the viewers are dreaming of each woman depicted in the book. Imaginary women, imaginary places combined together with the magic of color that become, in this last project, a major creative tool for Argentini. Flipping through the pages we jump from antique palaces in Italy, to urban landscapes in Japan to the desert of California. A Japanese lady is standing in a garage in Tokyo, screaming on the phone to her lover that is lying in bed in his flat in a building overlooking the Chao Phraya River in the night of Bangkok; A girl wearing a curly vintage wig inside an abandoned motor home in the California desert is holding a barbie doll that someone left behind a long time ago. A brunette with blue eyes is looking out of a car window thinking of her loved one that just left on a plane. An old Italian theatre with empty red velvet chairs on the left and a young girl wearing a red dress lying in an empty pool at night in the Arizona desert on the right side. As it always happens for a still photograph, it can only suggest a story. It is only a single frame from a movie. Every viewer will make his own film, will make up his own soundtrack and will choose a different beginning and a different end, creating his own story.

“I remember Sarah asking me, when I’d just begun therapy with her, what I looked for in a man. After a few moments of silent, tense deliberation I had it. ‘Hair,’ I blurted. ‘He has to have hair.’” Meredith Baxter is a beloved and iconic television actress. Her warmth, humor, and brilliant smile made her one of the most popular women on television, with millions of viewers following her on the small screen each week. Yet her success masked a tumultuous personal story and a harrowing private life. For the first time, Baxter is ready to share her incredible highs, (working with Robert Redford, Doris Day, Lana Turner, and the cast of Family Ties), and lows (a thorny relationship with her mother, a difficult marriage to David Birney, a bout with breast cancer), finally revealing the woman behind the image. From her childhood in Hollywood, growing up the daughter of actress and co-creator of One Day at a Time Whitney Blake, Baxter became familiar with the ups and downs of show business from an early age. She has emerged from her experiences with the renewed self-assurance, poise, and understanding that have enabled her to find a loving, respectful relationship with Nancy Locke, and to speak about it openly. Told with insight, wit, and disarming frankness, Untied is the eye-opening and inspiring life of an actress, a woman, and a mother who has come into her own. 1. Language: English. An Emergency in Slow Motion: The Inner Life of ...

Diane Arbus was one of the most brilliant and revered photographers in the history of American art. Her portraits, in stark black and white, seemed to reveal the psychological truths of their subjects. But after she committed suicide at the age of 48, the presumed chaos and darkness of her own inner life became, for many viewers, inextricable from her work. In the spirit of Janet Malcolm's classic examination of Sylvia Plath, The Silent Woman, William Todd Schultz's An Emergency in Slow Motion reveals the creative and personal struggles of Diane Arbus. Schultz, an expert in personality psychology, veers from traditional biography to look at Arbus's life through the prism of five central mysteries: her childhood, her outcast affinity, her sexuality, her time in therapy, and her suicide. He seeks not to give Arbus some definitive diagnosis, but to ponder some of the private motives behind her public works and acts. In this approach, Schultz not only goes deeper into her life than any previous writing, but provides a template to think about the creative life in general. Schultz's careful analysis is informed, in part, by the recent release of Arbus's writing by her estate, as well as interviews with Arbus's last therapist. An Emergency in Slow Motion combines new revelations and breathtaking insights into a must-listen psychobiography about a monumental artist - the first new look at Arbus in 25 years. 1.
