Guido Argentini: Eros
38,91 € *

The work of Guido Argentini has been evolving from his very first book Silvereye through the following four books until this latest project: Eros . From the abstract bodies coated with silver paint to the eroticism of Private Rooms and Reflections, the need of telling stories has become more and more urgent for Argentini. The images of Eros are only suggesting stories to the viewers. The use of the diptych, two images paired together, an image of a woman and a photograph of a landscape or a still life helps to create a narrative. These stories are still and silent they have no voice and no soundtrack. The stories are only told by the emotions of their characters. Each woman is dreaming and, at the same time, we, the viewers are dreaming of each woman depicted in the book. Imaginary women, imaginary places combined together with the magic of color that become, in this last project, a major creative tool for Argentini. Flipping through the pages we jump from antique palaces in Italy, to urban landscapes in Japan to the desert of California. A Japanese lady is standing in a garage in Tokyo, screaming on the phone to her lover that is lying in bed in his flat in a building overlooking the Chao Phraya River in the night of Bangkok; A girl wearing a curly vintage wig inside an abandoned motor home in the California desert is holding a barbie doll that someone left behind a long time ago. A brunette with blue eyes is looking out of a car window thinking of her loved one that just left on a plane. An old Italian theatre with empty red velvet chairs on the left and a young girl wearing a red dress lying in an empty pool at night in the Arizona desert on the right side. As it always happens for a still photograph, it can only suggest a story. It is only a single frame from a movie. Every viewer will make his own film, will make up his own soundtrack and will choose a different beginning and a different end, creating his own story.

John Nash, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of One of A...

In 2001, the critically acclaimed film A Beautiful Mind introduced millions to John Nash, Jr., one of America's most important 20th century mathematicians, nearly 50 years after he had won a Nobel Prize for his work. Naturally, most viewers of the movie will remember a prodigy suffering from paranoid schizophrenia while overlooking how the man's innovative studies and works had a major influence on everything from economics to biology, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and political philosophy. The "Nash equilibrium", a theory he developed when he was still a student in his 20s, has also affected games, military doctrine, and computing. Nash was still doing groundbreaking work and was in the prime of his life when he began demonstrating all kinds of odd behavior, initially alarming his wife Alicia and then stunning the academic world with an incoherent lecture in 1959. As it turned out, he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, which made him see things and believe in wild conspiracies like a national communist takeover by men wearing red ties. For nearly a decade after the diagnosis, Nash was treated in hospitals with various kinds of medication, including shock therapy, and Nash himself termed his mental health issues as making him go "from scientific rationality of thinking into the delusional thinking characteristic of persons who are psychiatrically diagnosed as 'schizophrenic' or 'paranoid schizophrenic'". Over time, with a better understanding of the problem and treatment, Nash began to recover his mental faculties and get back to work in the last few decades of the 20th century. 1. Language: English. This groundbreaking book by Amy Cuddy shows how we can attain "presence." Being present is a state where we modify how we see ourselves rather than thinking of the impressions we make on others. Cuddy explains that we don't need to go on a spiritual journey to leverage the power of being present. We only need to constantly remind ourselves to fine-tune our mentality, body language and behavior in response to a given situation. Amy Cuddy has galvanized tens of millions of viewers around the world with her TED talk about "power poses." Now she presents the enthralling science underlying these and many other fascinating body-mind effects, and teaches us how to use simple techniques to liberate ourselves from fear in high-pressure moments, perform at our best, and connect with and empower others to do the same. Brilliantly researched, impassioned, and accessible, Presence is filled with stories of individuals who learned how to flourish during the stressful moments that once terrified them. Every listener will learn how to approach their biggest challenges with confidence instead of dread, and to leave them with satisfaction instead of regret. 1. Language: English. The Universal Need for Ethics: Business Is the ...

Ethics - described briefly as the norms by which acceptable and unacceptable behaviors are measured - has been the concern, and perhaps the great dilemma, of sentient humans since Socrates subjected it to philosophical inquiry almost 2,500 years ago. Socrates believed, without universal acceptance, that the most pertinent issues people must deal with are related to how we live our lives, what actions are and are not righteous, and how people should live together peacefully and harmoniously. A vast parade of philosophers, religious leaders, politicians, professors, and self-help gurus have followed Socrates' lead through the ensuing centuries; it's a popular and enduring subject, perhaps because it is so complex, intriguing, and pervasive in every facet of our lives. Today, in 2015, ethics dominates our news in the form of anti-ethics. The headlines in newspapers and the lead stories on TV, radio, and Internet news are typically about such abhorrent behavior as lying, stealing, revenge, convictions for corruption, gratuitous murder, and misuse of public or other people's funds for personal gain. Readers, viewers, and listeners can hardly be faulted for thinking that we live in a corrupt society - exactly what Socrates and others did not want or envision. Perhaps the anti-ethical stance of the media is the most anti-ethical part of our society. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mason Dietz. Mike Leonard is a lucky man. It’s not everyone who gets parents like Jack and Marge. At 87, Jack is a pathological optimist with an inexhaustible gift of gab. Marge, Jack’s bride of 60 years, though cut from the same rough bolt of Irish immigrant cloth, is his polar opposite - pessimistic and proud of it. What was their son, Mike, thinking when he took a sabbatical from his job with NBC News so he could pile these two world-class originals along with three of his grown kids and a daughter-in-law into a pair of rented RVs and hit the road for a month?Mike was thinking that he wanted to give his parents the ultimate family reunion. And so, one February morning, three generations of Leonards set out on their journey under the dazzling Arizona sky. Thirty minutes later, one of the humongous recreational vehicles has an unplanned meeting with a concrete island at a convenience store. Thus begins the adventure of a lifetime - and an absolute gem of a book.In the course of their humorous, often poignant cross-country tour, from the desert Southwest to the New England coastline, the Leonards reminisce about their loves, their losses, and their rich and heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) lives, while encountering a veritable Greek chorus of roadside characters along the way. The home stretch finds the clan racing back to Chicago, hoping to catch the arrival of the next generation, Jack and Marge’s first great-grandchild. Through it all, Mike pieces together a century of family lore and lunacy - and discovers surprising sides to his parents that allow him to see them in a whole new light.Mike Leonard has captivated millions of television viewers with his wry and witty feature stories for NBC’s Today. Now he brings that same engaging charm and keen insight to the foibles and passions of his own blessedly unique family. By turns uproariously funny and deeply moving, The Ride of Our Lives delivers a lifetime of laughs, lessons, and p 1. Language: English. Narrator: Marc Cashman. By a close analysis of a variety of popular movies, foreign films, and documentaries, Seeing the Light: Exploring Ethics Through Movies represents an innovative approach to the study of ethics and the development of moral reasoning skills. Initial chapters focus on the human condition as a springboard for ethical reflection, followed by coverage of how seven major ethical theories can provide a framework for analyzing movies for their moral message. Later chapters reveal how movies help us reflect on ethical decision–making. A diverse range of classic and contemporary films are woven throughout the text to illustrate each argument. Filled with illuminating insights and thoughtful reflection, Seeing the Light reveals an ethical microcosm in the world of film that can help us think more clearly about the choices we face and decisions we make in the real world.
